Company History & Heritage
Honoring the dream of our parents
La Tortilla Factory was started in 1977 by Jose and Mary Tamayo. When they came to this country from Mexico, they were ultimately drawn to the pristine beauty of Sonoma County, California, which is known for its world-class food, wines and olive oil.
They raised their children to appreciate the rich soil, pure water, and the gentle fog as it cooled the sun-kissed fields. They took advantage of this good and wholesome bounty by creating foods of their native land in their tortilla factory.
Today the next generation of the Tamayo family,
and all of La Tortilla Factory’s employees, honor the founders’ dream by baking a variety of tortillas designed for your healthy lifestyle. From traditional corn and flour tortillas to low-carb, fat-free, organic and extra virgin olive oil tortillas and wraps, all are cooked with your health — and our founders’ commitment to quality — in mind.
A company heritage, flavored with tradition
It could have been the rolling hills draped in grape vines. Maybe it was the green and golden pastures, speckled with cattle. Or perhaps, it was simply one of those extraordinarily sunny, but mild days that grace the Sonoma landscape that spoke to Jose and Mary Tamayo when they first set foot in Northern California and decided that this would be their new home.
Whatever attracted them to Sonoma County it's likely that it was the overwhelming appreciation of fine handcrafted foods and wines that kept them there. Importing a piece of their delicious Mexican heritage to the rolling hills of Sonoma County, the Tamayo family first opened La Tortilla Factory in 1977. Three decades later, traditional flour tortillas are just a small fraction of the many wholesome specialty baked goods that La Tortilla Factory has to offer.

As the years pass, the company continues to flourish influenced by a new generation. Carlos, Willie and Mike Tamayo have cultivated the business by creating products that appeal to contemporary consumers' ever-changing eating habits while remaining grounded in their Mexican heritage.
Adding a wholesome dash of innovation to the food of their ancestors, the Tamayo family has found a variety of ways to incorporate these wonderful wraps and tortillas into any healthy lifestyle. Always striving for top quality, they are pleased to present everyone in your family a specialized alternative for nutritious everyday eating.
Establishing itself as an industry leader, La Tortilla Factory was the first to introduce Fat Free and Low-Carb tortillas. Responding once again to fresh consumer concerns, tastes and dietary needs, the company crafted its first organic tortillas in 2003, created solely from the finest, pure all-natural ingredients. Now, La Tortilla factory continues to be on the forefront of tortilla trends as the first to introduce an Extra Virgin Olive Oil line, which is destined to be a hit with the heart healthy crowd.
